Cline
Cline separates planning from action: it proposes a plan, and you approve the steps it takes. It can read and edit files, run commands, use the browser, and call MCP tools, which makes it capable but worth supervising. Local model support means the whole loop can run without sending code to a third party.
Strengths
- Plan-then-act model with human oversight of each step
- Broad tool access spanning files, terminal, browser, and MCP
- Runs against local models, keeping code on your machine
Weaknesses
- Agentic tool use needs supervision, especially with terminal access
- Gets the most from strong models, which need capable local hardware
- More moving parts than a simple autocomplete extension
