Black Forest Labs has released FLUX.2 [klein], described as an open, Apache 2.0 image model that runs in roughly 13GB of VRAM and generates images in as few as four steps. It is the permissively licensed member of the new FLUX.2 generation.
What was released
FLUX.2 [klein] follows the FLUX.1 family, whose schnell version is Apache 2.0 and whose dev version is non-commercial. Positioning klein as the open, commercially usable option repeats that split at the new generation, and the reported few-step generation suggests it is aimed at speed on consumer hardware. Image-quality claims are the developer’s own until independent comparisons appear.
Why it matters
The licence is the practical headline. As we cover in local image generation, FLUX.1 [dev]‘s non-commercial terms are a common trap for people who want to use generated images in their work. A capable, current FLUX model under Apache 2.0 gives commercial users a clearer option, alongside SDXL and Qwen-Image.
The context
Local image generation has settled into a few families: the SDXL ecosystem for customisation, FLUX for quality and text rendering, and newer permissive entrants like Qwen-Image. A new FLUX generation with an openly licensed member keeps the fast-moving part of that landscape accessible to people running on their own GPUs, usually through a tool like ComfyUI.
