Chroma
An open-source vector database designed to be easy to start with, and a common default for local RAG prototypes. It runs embedded in your application or as a server, and needs almost no setup to get going.
Strengths
- Very easy to start with, embedded or as a server
- A sensible default for prototypes and small to mid-size collections
- Apache 2.0, and runs entirely locally
Weaknesses
- You may outgrow it as filtering needs and dataset size grow
- Fewer advanced indexing and filtering options than Qdrant
- Larger collections can prompt a migration to a heavier store
