Qwen3.5-4B

Alibaba · Vision-language · 4B · 262k context · Released 1 March 2026

Commercial use permitted Text + Image + Video Text Open weights Runs on CPU Apple Silicon

Qwen3.5-4B is the small end of the Qwen3.5 release (which also includes 0.8B, 2B and 9B dense models). It reads text, images and video and produces text, with a 262k context extensible towards a million tokens with YaRN. Apache 2.0 licensing means no commercial conditions. Notably, Qwen stopped shipping sub-10B dense models after Qwen3.5: the 3.6 and 3.8 generations moved the small end up to 27B dense and mixture-of-experts models, so Qwen3.5-4B remains the current Qwen dense model at this size rather than a superseded one.

Strengths

  • Apache 2.0, freely usable commercially with no territory restriction
  • Strong for its size, and the current Qwen dense model at 4B
  • Runs on an 8GB card or a laptop at a 4-bit quantisation
  • Multimodal input (image and video) with a long 262k context

Weaknesses

  • A 4B model knows far less than its benchmark scores suggest; small models hallucinate heavily, so pair it with retrieval for factual work
  • Vision support in local runtimes is less mature than text-only inference
  • Outclassed on hard reasoning by larger models, as expected at this size

Hardware requirements

Quantisation Approx. VRAM Notes
Q4_K_M ~3GB Fits an 8GB card or a laptop with room for context. Approximate; the vision encoder adds a little
Q8_0 ~6GB Near-lossless, comfortable on a 12GB card. Approximate
BF16 ~10GB Full precision including the vision encoder. Approximate

Also runs on CPU (slower). Optimised builds available for Apple Silicon.
